You probably know some of these, but no matter, we’re here to Missing BIGBANG leader’s return
To celebrate his 29 years on Earth (30 in Korean age), we’ve decided to take a look at 29 facts that you may (or may not) know about everyone’s favorite K-pop superstar!
G-Dragon’s full name is Kwon Ji-Yong, and is also the title of his new album. The name G-Dragon came from his real name Jiyong (G “지” [Ji] & “용” [Yong] which means “Dragon” in Korean. He was also born on the year of the dragon according to the Chinese calendar.
GD won “Best Songwriter Award” in MKMF (MNet Km Music Festival) when BIGBANG performed there in 2007.
GD has always said Pharrell Williams is one of his favourite artists since he was very young. Other favourites include: Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna, Blackstreet, and Wu-Tang Clan.
GD’s first single ‘Heartbreaker’ was a controversial one. Sony Music accused YG of plagiarism, asserting that Flo Rida’s “Right Round” had too many similarities. In the end, they compromised by creating a remix of the song featuring Flo Rida for his bonus track album.
GD’s first entertainment industry appearance was at a kids TV program called “Bbo Bbo Bbo”
When he was 7 he became a member of Little Roora. Check him out rapping as a 7 year old!
G-Dragon was originally a trainee at SM Entertainment for 5 years until he was persuaded by YG CEO Yang Hyun-suk to change to YG at age 12.
During his trainee days, YG CEO Yang Hyun-suk pushed GD by making him write a new song every week!
Taeyang and G-Dragon were initially going to debut as a duo, but the YG board changed their minds and decided on adding 3 other members into the mix.

Even when he’s drunk, GD still acts like a posh celebrity, as explained by Seungri (again) here at around the 22:15 mark:
“I started rapping because of that album. I’m not fluent in English now, but back then I didn’t know anything. I would write down the lyrics to ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ in Korean – not translating it, but phonetically writing out each word.”
G-dragon had this to say about the more recent US market attention, “Just to put it real simply, [American tastemakers] are taking notice because I’m doing well. If I didn’t do well, they wouldn’t even have noticed me or cared. So I don’t put too much meaning behind it.”
G-Dragon talking to Billboard, “When I was younger, BIGBANG didn’t go on many variety programs so we used to try and plan many fun events for our concert, like drama parodies, which Korean fans enjoyed. But foreign fans don’t really know that about us, so to them, I think as a performer, it is crucial to perfectly prepare high quality music and performance.”
Guess that’s where this ‘Secret Garden” parody originated from then!
GD is also known as the “Iguana Idol” because he would change his hairstyle several times a year!
Super Junior’s KangIn was GD’s childhood friend.
GD has said he would like to get married – one day!
“I want a daughter no matter what. I really want to have a daughter quickly.” And when the interviewer said, “Then you have to get married fast,” G-Dragon stated, “I will get married soon. Even tomorrow is fine with me.”
GD once chose Seungri as the BIGBANG member he would take on a date if other BIGBANG members were females, but everyone ships him and TOP because it’s more fun!
GD is the youngest child in his family and has a sister named Kwon Dami. Dami owns a fashion boutique and GD helps her out sometimes by wearing her wares.
G-Dragon was rumoured to be dating Japanese model/actress/singer Mizuhara Kiko but then it was also rumoured that the pair broke up when they both un-followed each other on twitter and Instagram. Unfortunately for us, we may never know the entire truth!
GD’s favourite colours (from what we’ve found all around the interwebs) are: yellow, white, green, black, red and gold – so pretty much the whole spectrum.
GD was initially cold towards Seungri at the very beginning as he wasn’t happy that BIGBANG had expanded to five members. However, the two eventually grew close over their mutual love of K-dramas (as explained by Seungri at around the 47:20 mark)
GD is a massive fan of Ivy and BoA, so much so that he was part of their fan clubs (though his accounts have since expired)!
GD is a perfectionist – in fact, he has said that he can’t listen to his older songs because he can only find faults with them!
Apparently he sang Lil’ Bow Wow’s “That’s My Name” in his YG audition, though no evidence has surfaced (yet)…
G-Dragon was last reported to have 7 tattoos, though for all we know he could have more by now!
GD’s room is the cleanest and the neatest amongst BIGBANG, while Taeyang’s room is the one called the “A-Shop” because it’s full of limited edition clothes and stuff from many famous brands.
BIGBANG’s first big hit was “Lies“, but it was initially a track GD wrote for his solo album. In fact, GD shed some tears when he was forced to turn “Lies” from a solo track to a BIGBANG track.
GD has said that if he wasn’t a singer, he would be involved with fashion. Well it turns out that he’s managed to do both!
GD’s latest solo album, Kwon Ki Yong, is named after his real name and was released on a USB rather than a CD. To promote the album, GD kicked off his second solo world tour, the Act III: MOTTE tour, where it has been nothing short of a huge success (and an unforgettable experience when he stopped by Australia). In fact, Act III: MOTTE is the largest tour by a Korean artist in the U.S and Europe, as well as the largest ever tour by a Korean solo artist!
